Information for participants

AAS will be hosted in Macquarie University's Arts Precinct.

Getting to Macquarie University

The conference will take place in the Arts Precinct, 25 Wallys Walk. (O12 on Campus Map)  (Google Maps)

Driving instructions

It takes approximately 30 minutes (depending on the traffic) to drive from the Sydney CBD to the campus.

By Train:

Macquarie University has its own Metro train station, 8 to 10 minutes walking distance to the Arts Precinct. A trip from Central Station in the Sydney CBD to Macquarie University Station takes 38 minutes (Train + Metro). Change at either Chatswood Station or at Epping Station to access the Metro line. From Chatswood Station to Macquarie University Metro Station takes approximately ten minutes.

By Bus:

Various bus lines also service the University. A bus trip from the Sydney CBD takes one hour leaving from Central Station or around 40 minutes from Wynyard. There are no direct buses from Sydney Central Station - Wynyard station is best. The best bus routes to take are 288 and 292.

Using Trip Planner to find the best route:

For calculating the best route and mode of transport from your hotel or location, use the official public transport website Trip Planner | transportnsw.info and enter “Wallys Walk Macquarie Park” in the “address” field.

Parking

Parking is available on campus. Vistor parking costs $16.80 for the first hour, then $8.40 per hour thereafter, up to a maximum daily rate of $67.20.

Childcare

The AAS takes the challenges of childcare – and other caring responsibilities – seriously. The 2022 AAS conference at Deakin made great progress towards creating a more inclusive space in relation to the ‘childcare-conference conundrum’. We draw on the CARE program (Childcare, Accommodate families, Resources, Establish social networks) outlined by Calisi et al. (2018) to offer the following:

  • Children, particularly small children and babies, are welcome at our conference!

  • Delegates requiring temporary childcare arrangement can contact Waratah Cottage (up to 5 years old).

  • Children and babies may be breastfed in all conference spaces without restriction.

  • We ask that delegates register their plans to bring children, with or without carers. Please contact ausanth2023@gmail.com

  • Dedicated carers (co-parents, grandparents, etc.) will be admitted and catered at no cost (excluding the conference dinner, for which separate tickets must be purchased). This is limited to one carer per delegate/family, unless by arrangement (e.g. for families with special needs).

  • We can arrange a dedicated room available for breastfeeding and pumping if this is something you need. Again, please email us to let us know.

  • The Wallumattagal Campus grounds are luscious: there are lots of brush turkeys and ducks to look at and lots of room for children to run around and expend energy, away from busy roads. Balls and other outdoor toys can be made available for use if that would help – please let us know in advance.

  • All responsibility for the care of these children falls to the parent/guardian, and no liability is accepted by the Australian Anthropology Society or Macquarie University.

COVID19 measures

When coming to campus, please ensure that you follow these simple COVID Safe behaviours.

  • Stay home when unwell. Do not come to campus if you have even the mildest of symptoms or are in any way unwell.

  • Get vaccinated. We strongly encourage all staff and students to get vaccinated if they have not already done so and to get their booster shot as soon as they are eligible.

  • Get tested. If you are unwell, it is your personal responsibility to consider the wellbeing of others with whom you may come in contact, both on and off campus. We encourage the use of Rapid Antigen Testing to help you make an informed decision about coming to campus.

  • Protect yourself and others by:

    • wearing a mask is encouraged in indoor settings particularly where physical distancing cannot be maintained

    • maintain 1.5m physical distancing wherever possible

    • maintain good handwashing and cough/sneeze hygiene

  • If you test positive to COVID-19, please stay home until your acute symptoms have gone.

  • If you are informed that you are a contact of someone who has tested positive to COVID-19: monitor for symptoms, wear a mask and maintain physical distance.
