The AAS takes the challenges of childcare – and other caring responsibilities – seriously. The 2022 AAS conference at Deakin made great progress towards creating a more inclusive space in relation to the ‘childcare-conference conundrum’. We draw on the CARE program (Childcare, Accommodate families, Resources, Establish social networks) outlined by Calisi et al. (2018) to offer the following: •Children, particularly small children and babies, are welcome at our conference! •Delegates requiring temporary childcare arrangement can contact Waratah Cottage (up to 5 years old). •Children and babies may be breastfed in all conference spaces without restriction. •We ask that delegates register their plans to bring children, with or without carers. Please contact ausanth2023@gmail.com •Dedicated carers (co-parents, grandparents, etc.) will be admitted and catered at no cost (excluding the conference dinner, for which separate tickets must be purchased). This is limited to one carer per delegate/family, unless by arrangement (e.g. for families with special needs). •We can arrange a dedicated room available for breastfeeding and pumping if this is something you need. Again, please email us to let us know. •The Wallumattagal Campus grounds are luscious: there are lots of brush turkeys and ducks to look at and lots of room for children to run around and expend energy, away from busy roads. Balls and other outdoor toys can be made available for use if that would help – please let us know in advance. •All responsibility for the care of these children falls to the parent/guardian, and no liability is accepted by the Australian Anthropology Society or Macquarie University.
